Implementing Full-Duplex Serial Communication Using MicroPython

I’ll guide you through setting up a UART communication channel on the Raspberry Pi Pico, using MicroPython for simplicity and accessibility.

Design Overview

The Raspberry Pi Pico, equipped with the RP2040 microcontroller, supports multiple UART interfaces. This allows for easy full-duplex communication, where the device can transmit and receive data simultaneously. We will establish a UART communication between the Raspberry Pi Pico and a computer, enabling data exchange in both directions.

Why UART?

UART is chosen for this project due to its simplicity and widespread support in both hobbyist and industrial hardware. It requires minimal wiring (just two data lines along with ground) and is supported natively by most operating systems through virtual COM port drivers.

Implementation

Hardware Setup

  • Raspberry Pi Pico: Main microcontroller board.
  • USB to UART Converter: For connecting the Pico to a computer.
  • Connecting wires: To connect the UART pins of the Pico to the converter.

Wiring Diagram

Connect the Pico’s UART0 TX pin to the RX pin of the USB converter and the Pico’s RX pin to the TX pin of the converter. Don’t forget to connect the GND (ground) pins.

MicroPython Code Setup

Install MicroPython on your Raspberry Pi Pico, then use the following script to set up UART communication:

Debugging

  • Double-check your wiring, especially the ground connection between devices.

Once the setup is complete, you should see “Hello from Pico!” appearing on your computer’s UART terminal, and any data sent from the computer should appear in the Pico’s MicroPython output. This setup demonstrates a basic but effective way to establish serial communication between a microcontroller and a PC.
